Caution! This post contains parental bragging! Consider yourself warned.
Whew! What a week last week was. Thursday night was #1's eighth grade graduation. She has attended a visual and performing arts school for the last 3 years. The public schools run several magnet schools (magnet meaning to draw certain students that are interested in the curriculum). A magnet school focuses on different curriculums. Our district has math, science, robotics, leadership and performing arts magnets. The school that #1 attended for 6th and 7th grade had to close due to budget cuts and because their grant money was gone. It was so hard on the kids to be split up. The district decided to make their elementary performing arts school a K-8th school and only allowed 25 kids to attend in the 8th grade. This is the first 8th grade class to graduate from this school.
I'm always amazed at the talent that has bloomed in her group of peers. All the students talents were displayed during graduation. #1 played the drums as well as the bass. This is a picture that the newspaper took of #1 during the performance. It was on the front page of the local section. (I would have linked it but it has her full name on it. ) She's a celebrity, lol!
#1 received 8 awards for acedemic acheivement as well as music awards. My mom and I were taking pictures of her each time she received and award. Mom pointed out that all the pictures were going to look exactly the same so one would have done the trick.
I cried because this group of kids will never be together in the same sense that they have for the last 3 years. I cried because they will all have to make a name for themselves again when they go to high school next year. Most will be attending the public high school that focuses on the performing arts. It houses over 1000 students. I terrified.
This week is almost as busy for me as last week. I'll try to download the Chicago pictures (yes, I survived!) and post them soon.
School's out this Thursday. I'll breathe a sigh of relief then.

That is so fantastic SG. I am very happy for the entire family. I already knew a little about your daughter and her music but thanks so much for filling in about the magnet schools and stuff. That was great to hear.
Going to High School next year will just be warm ups for where life will lead her. She is going to do fantastic.

Your daughter is beautiful, like her mother.

My school system has had the whole magnet thing as well, but they were all cut out as of the end of this year.
