    You Want Us To What?

I have a friend that I've gotten to know through our youngest children. We see each other every day after school when picking up the kids. We chit chat but haven't really spent tons of time together outside of the school. Our kids spend lots ot time together at each other's houses so we do see each other that way also.

The friend is a couple of years older than me. She's 40. She has 2 kids about the same ages as my girls. Last spring we were walking in the school parking lot and she stopped me and told me she had something to tell me. My mind raced as I thought that maybe she was getting divorced, was moving or was a swinger. What she told me would rock my world.

She blurted out that she was pregnant! I couldn't even speak as my mouth hit the pavement. I immediately began to think about the lunch we had had just 2 weeks prior. I had gone on and on about how nice it was to have our children be older and not have to deal with all the feedings, lack of sleep and the equipment one needs to have to have a baby around. She never said a word to me.

After I picked up my jaw, I started talking a mile a minute about what she was going to do. She was almost 40 years old and her youngest child was 9. The whole time my mind was thinking of what I would do if I were in this situation. She remained very calm and said that she was at peace with the news now, however it had taken her a month to get there. She had waited a month to tell anyone!

I watched her through her pregnancy and said a prayer of thanks that it wasn't me. She remarked that it was much harder to be pregnant at 40 than it was at 30. Everything went well except the baby was born 2 months premature. The baby still weighed 7 lbs. This friend's other children were both over 10 pounds at birth.

The baby is a girl and her name is Emma. She is beautiful and I really looked forward to seeing her every day.

I was shocked yet again when a few weeks ago, Emma's mom called me to ask if Mr. Sign and I would be Godparents to Emma at her baptism. I had a hard time speaking because I couldnt' fathom that someone would want us as Godparents. I told her that I'm not Catholic. She asked if Mr. Sign had been confirmed (I don't think that's what she called it). I told her that he was a tried and true Catholic so that means we are ligit to become Emma's Godparents.

Wow! I'm honored and terrified. This is a lifelong commitment of birthday cards and Christmas gifts. I'm excited to think that this will keep us closer to their family.

Now, I just hope Emma never asks me what I think about churches.

Oh sweetie I understand this. I have had 5 miscarriages and the last one almost killed me. I mean my hemogloban was at 5 and at 4 you are usually dead or so they said. My emergency surgery was 1/15/1991. Back then it made me feel as if i were less then a woman. I have been tested and havn't had a doctor tell me i couldn't conceive and give birth. wtf?

There has been a great emotional healing in my life since. I have had freinds try to talk me into adoption and foster care because they see my life as being so great (yea right) and while I am not rich I am financially secure (years of sacrifice ie.. wearing the same clothes, a car without the bells and whistles, i eat a lot of cereal, and color my own hair) After my divorce my main goal was to keep my beacon score up there.

My friends say i have it all together, i think straight, make good descisions, have my own house, (belongs to the bank) always take the next right step. I don't always take the right step.

Anyway, one of my best friends 17 year old daughter is pregnant. i have been friends with her since 1990. We are close and she is one of the prescious few that can show up at my home unexpected and get invited in. My friend doesn't have 2 cents to rub together and probably could'nt buy a pack of gum on credit. When her oldest daughter got accepted into college I went shopping and hooked her up. This girl has always done right, she is focussed on her future and there was no way in hell she was going to college without everything she needed and wanted. Not if i had anything to do with it anyway.

So her youngest is now five month's pregnant and asked me to be 'godmother' to her son. It's a boy! Hotdog! I am not mad at Cynthia even though her mother is upset. Right now she needs someone that can find the good in all this. That someone is me. This kid reminds me a lot of myself at her age. I can still relate. i don't know what to do. I know I want to, but that is a big responsility and should not be taken lightly. Crap! I am 43 yrs. old.

At me age i have just been hoping to meet a man with children of his own so that way i could slide in just in time for grandkids.

Sorry that my comment is longer then your post. Please forgive me.

    I amy just do it.

    Wow! That's quite a compliment!

Your friend must think very highly of you (even though you say y'all don't know each other that well).

I like to think that babies are always a blessing.

Can't wait to see pictures of your new goddaughter! :)

Perhaps you were surprised when she asked the big question. However, it seems to be a no-brainer to me. You and Mr. S are excellent parents, friends, and spouses.

Emma will be doubly blessed by having you both in her life.

I'm godmother to my niece, Megan. She's amazing. Knowing that I'm close to the 'mother role' because of the godmother expectations means a great deal to me. I take it seriously. Thank God my sister and her husband were able to see beyond my trash mouth when they chose me. *grin*

    Congrats!!!!

Wow to trust you with this news and to ask you to be godparents. She must really think the world of you. Think it over but you would make great godparents.

I could not even imagine being pregnant, and I'm only 37. And my youngest is 3 so it wasn't even that long ago. We have alot of patient's 40 or over who are pregnant. It's pretty commonplace now. We have a couple women 45 and 46 who are actively trying to get pregnant.

Your gonna make a great Godmother!

    You'll be a great God-parent.

Actually, I've been thinking of asking you if you'd like to adopt Webby.

I cleaned his cage and everything.

He's sweet, really. You and Mr. Sign will love him.

Jenn, that's a lovely post. You will make the best god parents ever. When Emma grows up you will be an inspiration to her.
