    Protein

One of the most important nutritional goals for weight loss surgery patients is to maintain protein levels somewhere between 60-100 grams per day. For the last couple of weeks I've been able to hit 60 using the protein shakes.

The issue with making the shake thicker is that I can only drink a small amount at a time so adding things to them is not an option. The shakes consist of skim milk, yogurt and protein powder. I'll have to use less milk if I use any at all.

The protein levels in my blood are a mixed bag. My albumin (protein in the blood) levels were a tad bit on the low side but nothing to be concerned about. My overall protein levels were right where they should be.

The dietician believes that my caloric intake is too low and that it may be causing my headaches. Apparently, 400-600 calories a day is making me malnourished. I do know that the days where I get more calories allow me to lose weight the next day.

I the headaches don't get better this week I will have to go see Dr. Googly Eyes. Yesterday I started having vertigo when I move my head too quickly. Weird.

    I hope he doesn't say...
"don't turn your head too quickly then."
    600 calories?
How many are in a shot of Cuervo?
Enough for me to get you a bit hammered?

I was given the ok to try alcohol on Friday. One drink will put me under the table now as it goes directly to my intestines. I'm a cheap drunk now!

If you would ever put the controller down, you could be typing words of incouragement to our dear, sweet, wasting away, friend Jenn!
..and not end up being like #8 or 9.

    Yikes.

Listen, try the prepared shakes from Advant-Edge. They sell the powder, but I'm suggesting buying the prepared shakes and blending them with yogurt and possibly some fruit to thicken them up. You might also try making them into a pudding with some sugar-free pudding.

I lived on the Advant-Edge stuff for months after I had my stuff done. That...and plain yogurt.

2 1/2 years later...and I ate a half a hamburger last night. Impressed yet? *snicker*

Stay well! Also, try to make sure you're getting enough water. In the past, my migraines were aggravated by the fact that I was bordering on dehydration.

If you need more calories and aren't too carb adverse, try whole milk (can't remember if you are lactose intolerant, in which case disregard). It is a major bitch trying to get all of that protein in, isn't it. The only way I can do it is starting off with red meat in the morning. I also try and limit my snacks to almonds and other protein things. Most days I'm pretty successful, and without protein supplements. If you do sugar-free ice cream(which I so wish was full-fat), try mixing eggs and milk/soy milk into a milkshake. Ezpy's protein pancakes are also pretty delicious.

The protein drinks/bars don't work well for me, although my husband ate and Odwalla one in front of me that didn't send me hurling (yes, it's that bad).

Wow, I am amazed that you can drink. Our surgeon doesn't allow it for a year as he says the liver is so stressed out trying to process the large amounts of fat being flushed that it isn't great to add another toxin to its burden. But docs vary on advice, that's for sure.

Keep up the good work! I'm wearing my first pair of 22-24 pants today and it's feeling great!

    HI hon,
YOu would think that those damn docs would come up with a miracle protein thingy since so many of the gastric bypass folks have such a hard time with it...my friend even started losing her damn hair for a little while cause of it..not trying to scare ya! She was barely getting any protein in...she is doing better now..has her hair back and everything! lol
I hope you are feeling better soon. I will be sending good thoughts your way!

I found some yogurt here: http://www.fageusa.com/products.html

I mix it with frozen berries (defrosted) and splenda. I also add a touch of vanilla.

The cool thing is, it's low in sugar, high in protein (20 g./svg.)!

If you like peanut butter signgurl, you can get this stuff it's called POWER BUTTER. It's really good and high in protein. I never could do the shakes. I still can't tolerate milk and it's been almost a 16 months. Lucky you-what I wouldn't give for a bowl of cereal. So now in the mornings I eat Oatmeal. It's Quaker Weight Control. It has 2gms of sugar and 6 grms of protein for 1 pack. I wish I could drink alcohol too. Have you tried? I haven't. I'm afraid. I heard the ratio is 1oz per hour. Like why bother? LOL. I think your dietician is right though-that doesn't seem to be alot of calories. OMG...I remember when I could eat that many calories in ONE meal. Remember those days? Ahhh memories.

If you go the route of the protean bars and shakes you may want to check out Sam's Club. It still costs a bit but I think they have a decent selection and they seem to have the best price in the area.

Have you tried Unjury? My wife used it after her second bypass revision (to fix the botched job the first surgeon did). It's great stuff and can be mixed in with many different drinks, she liked it with hot chocolate. I just threw away the last jar of it today, as my wife passed away last year from a brain tumor. Another bariatric surgery patient had recommended it to us, and it really adds alot of protein to your diet.
